Writing the Body of an Essay

1. Endeavor to understand the type of essay you are expected to write and use well structured paragraphs to guide your readers towards the conclusion.

2. Decide on what you want the main idea of you paragraph to be. This should include what you are trying to pass across and how it is related to the main idea of the essay.

3. When you’ve determined the point, ensure you can support that point with about two or more evidences. Where you can’t support it with good evidences, it is advisable you reconsider adding that point to your paragraph.

4. Begin each paragraph of the essay with a thesis statement. It should cover all you are going to be talking about in that section and no more.

5. Develop an introduction to the paragraph. This is a sentence that sort of introduces the main idea of the paragraph. You should endeavor to sum up the point briefly. You do not need to be detailed about this.

6. Develop each of your ideas with a sentence. Each paragraph should flow naturally into the next. There should be no disconnect between paragraphs. This is a must for a good essay. Ensure that each paragraph is supported by the ideas it contains. And of course the paragraphs may not necessarily be long. Leave enough spaces between each paragraph where you could write down elaborations of the point as you get new ideas later. This could be for further explanation, discussion or description.

7. Every topic sentence of each paragraph should support the thesis statement that you stated in the introduction.

8. Furnish the paragraph with supporting evidences. Clarify how the evidence supports the main idea of the paragraph. Use examples and illustrations to buttress your argument. In moving from one example to another, use words that show transition like “firstly”, “next” and “finally”.

9. Each paragraph should end with a concluding sentence. The concluding sentence should tie up the point you’ve raised in the body paragraph. You could introduce the concluding sentence with words like “in conclusion”.

10. After writing the body paragraphs, read through to check for grammatical errors, fluency and coherence. Ensure your points and sentences are written in a logical order.
